Watermelon Moscato Slushies

Happy Monday!

I don't make a lot of adult beverages for the blog, and right now I'm wondering why. They are, quite honestly, one of my favorite things to make for chatting about. Why, you might ask? Because I get to drink my subjects when I'm done shooting photos of them!

I mean, obviously, I could eat or drink all my photo subjects when I'm done with them. Some dishes just aren't as good after photo shoots. Like anything hot. Soups, hot sandwiches, pizzas, etc. It usually takes me about 45 minutes to complete a photo shoot, so by the end of that, whatever was hot has usually cooled.

But this? By the time I was done with my photo shoot, the slushy had melted just the right amount. It reminded me of a slurpee in all the right ways. An alcoholic slurpee, that is.

Seedless watermelon was on sale last week, so I snapped one up. Seedless watermelon is great for recipes since you don't have to pick through the fruit to remove the seeds. This one I picked out was perfect. The hubby couldn't keep his hands off it. I took what I needed for the project and turned him loose on the rest.

I adapted this recipe from a wine slushy recipe with peaches and moscato. Actually, I take that back. I made Peach Wine Slushies for a Memorial Day Party, and my husband's cousin's wife's mother (whew) suggested a watermelon variation. She even had watermelon and a pink moscato on hand. So, what did we do?

We dropped our (empty) Peach Wine Slushies, and made more slushies. Of course!

The technique to making these things is to blend the fruit, a wee bit o' sugar, and the wine into a frothy mixture. Once blended, you pour the mixture into ice cube trays. Freeze until solid, and then toss the ice cubes in the blender. Voila! Slushies!

Watermelon and Pink Moscato make a perfect combination.

I actually only have 2 regular ice cube trays. The rest make ice cubes in the shape of stars. Hehe. Kind of fun.

Plus, they look so cute :)

My pot of mint is growing like crazy. I've been a bad gardener, I haven't posted a garden update since May. I'm hoping to get a post up this week, but I'll tell you right now, this year's garden hasn't been the most successful. I've learned tons, but I don't have tons of vegetables to show for it. My herbs, on the other hand, are growing like weeds. I'm happy about that, I hate buying herbs at the grocery store. They just seem flavorless compared to what you can grow. Since my mint plant is huge, I didn't feel bad stealing a garnish.

Mint = Pretty, fresh, yummy. Just do it.

Did everyone have a great weekend? We had a sunny weekend, probably the first one in a month. I loved it! I took a long walk on Saturday and got the entire lawn mowed yesterday. I was checking out my steps after mowing the lawn yesterday, and was awed to see I got in 23,000 steps. According to the app, that's like walking 11 miles. Pretty good!

Mariota had his first experience with a squirrel this weekend. Due to being a puppy and having an extremely small bladder, Mariota goes out a lot. Like every hour and a half. We were out around 6:30 on Saturday night, making our usual lap around the yard. The squirrels usually climb trees when there's a dog in the yard, but for some reason, 2 of them remained on the ground. Only, I didn't know they did. Until Mariota and I came around a corner, and there they were. About 2 feet from us. Mariota froze in pointer position. Stiff as a board. Luckily, he didn't bark. The 2 squirrels just sat there, staring him down, sizing him up. I had frozen out of fear of the 2 squirrels pouncing on my puppy, but realized in an instant that this was bad. Keeping an eye on the squirrels the whole time, I deftly moved forward and grabbed Mariota. The squirrels didn't move as I turned on heel and got Mariota the heck out of there. Whew. That could have been a disaster. I just keep picturing all the wrestling, the teeth, the claws, fur flying, growling, screeching... I'm just glad that didn't happen.

So now, I make lots of noise in the backyard before the dogs go out. Lots and lots of noise :)

Have a great day everyone!

Ingredients (makes 4 drinks):

1 bottle Pink Moscato (I used Barefoot)
2 cups watermelon, chopped, deseeded
2-3 tbsp sugar (add sugar to taste. The watermelon is pretty sweet on its own)
mint sprigs (optional)

Directions:

1. Combine wine, watermelon, and sugar in a blender. Blend until completely smooth.
2. Pour mixture into ice cube trays. Freeze until solid, or overnight.
3. Remove ice cubes from tray. Add ice cubes to blender, blend until you reach slushy consistency. Adding a couple more splashes of wine can thin the mixture out, if needed. Garnish with mint, if desired. Serve immediately!

    1. I should make them more regularly! I think about it often. I'm currently trying to think of a cocktail to use Maple Bacon Doughnut Vodka in. I'll be sure to link up these slushies :)
